KWL Chart
English Language Arts Standards
Strand: Informational Text
Topic: Key ideas and Details
Standard Statement: RI.5.2. Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text
Section of the Text
I would use this strategy at the beginning of the chapter to see what the students already know. I would probably have them look at the intro on page 2 and 3 before writing.
Rationale
I chose this strategy because it is a good pre-assessment for the students. By looking at the students KWL Charts, I can learn what they already know and what kinds of things they want to know from this chapter. This strategy can help me plan my lessons.
What I Want to Accomplish
I want my students to write things that they already know about decimals and ask questions about what they are curious of. I also want them to think about the big picture of what they learned after the chapter is completed.
Steps to Use this Strategy
Tell students what the subject is
Have them fill in the K (Know) column with what they already know about the topic
Have them fill in the W (Want to Know) column with questions they have about the topic
Teach the Lesson/chapter
Have them fill in the L (Learned) column with things that they have learned in the chapter
Materials
KWL Chart and a Pen or Pencil
