Chapter 1:
Place Value, Adding and Subtracting
In this chapter, students will learn about decimals and place value and then how to add and subtract decimals. The text features in the chapter make reading and locating information very easy. This chapter is written at a 2nd grade reading level and therefore allows for students of many reading levels to be able to read and understand the chapter. I will use multiple strategies with this chapter including admit and exit slips, word sorts, concept circles, selective reading guides, and KWL charts. The students will also have the opportunity to use websites such as IXL Math Practice and AAA Math to assist them in better understanding the chapter. Throughout my research of the topic and chapter, I found lots of literature that can help students see the fun and authenticity in math. On this website, you will find how this chapter aligns with the Common Core State Standards, different resources that can be used with the chapter, text features of the chapter, strategies that can be used wile teaching the chapter, technology that accompanies the chapter, literature (both fiction and non-fiction) that can expand knowledge, and also the Fry Readability Test.
